Volunteer opportunity
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful and the City of Sugar Land are co-sponsoring a Christmas Tree Recycling on Saturday, January 3rd. On that date, Christmas trees that have been collected on special collection dates will be ground into mulch – which will be available free of charge to Sugar Land residents! Mulch will be available for pickup on Saturday, January 3, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Eldridge Park, 2500 Eldridge Road.
Special arrangements have been made for curbside collection of Christmas trees on the following dates:
* Saturday, December 27
* Wednesday, December 31
* Saturday, January 3
Christmas trees set out on any other garbage pickup day will be picked up as trash and will be sent to the landfill. If it is more convenient for you to drop off your tree, there are two locations where trees can be dropped 24 hours a day from December 26 through the morning of January 3. The locations are the First Colony Athletic Park, located at 3232 Austin Parkway and Eldridge Park, located at 2500 Eldridge Road.
We are in need of student volunteers (age 15 or older, please) to assist with the event – it’s a great way to get some service hours in before school starts again! We also need a few more adult volunteers to help with the event also. The work will take place at Eldridge Park and two shifts will be available – 8 a.m. to Noon and 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are interested, contact the KSLB office at 281-313-5752 or
kslb@infohwy.com.
Upcoming Classes
KSLB offers classes to area residents interested in learning more about enhancing the environment through responsible yard care.
Tree Care 101 is a 2 hour overview on tree care and tree selection. The session includes the basics of proper tree planting and care, including pruning and a review of appropriate trees for our area. Participants will receive a free Tree Care Guide. There is no charge for the class, but space is limited so interested parties should contact KSLB to reserve a spot for one of the following dates:
* Saturday, January 24. 10 a.m. to Noon. City Park, 225 7th Street (77478). This park is located at the corner of 7Th and Wood Street.
* Sunday, February 8. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Lost Creek Park, 3703 Lost Creek Blvd (77479). This park is located off Settlers Way, between Hwy 6 and Lexington Blvd.
November 15 BOPA a Success!
The Battery, Oil, Paint, Anti-freeze collection event held on November 15 was a great success. Area residents dropped off more than 885 gallons of paint and more than 200 gallons of oil and antifreeze. All of the materials gathered at the event will be recycled or disposed of properly so as not to contaminate landfills or waterways. We appreciate the assistance of the City of Sugar Land, the Fort Bend County Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Center, First Colony Community Association, Flex Oil Services of Channelview, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Jamba Juice and Panera Bread.
New Website Coming Soon
Before the end of the year, you’ll see a whole new look on our website. You’ll still find us at
www.kslb.org but the site has been revamped to include more information about upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and work going on to Keep Sugar Land Beautiful! Special thanks to Kevin Croskrey of eMUNICATIONS.com, Inc" for his assistance with our new site.
Mark Your Calendars
The 2nd Annual Old West Sporting Clays Tournament is scheduled for Friday, February 13. We are pleased to be honoring Lisa and Jerry Simon for their community leadership. If you are interested in sponsorship or signing up a team for the event, please let us know. It promises to be a terrific event.
And it’s not too soon to let you know that the 2004 Don’t Mess with Texas Trash Off is scheduled for Saturday, March 27. This is an event for kids of all ages, and we welcome individuals, families, school groups, church groups, neighborhoods – well everyone! It’s a great opportunity to work together to keep our community a beautiful place to live. If you are interested in helping to plan the event, contact us. We want to make this event better every year.
The KSLB Tip of the Month
Twenty-five percent more trash is thrown away during the period from Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday than any other time of year. What can you do to reduce holiday waste?
* Give gifts that don’t need to be wrapped at all: tickets to concerts, museums or sporting events, gift certificates, plants or even the gift of time.
* Wrap gifts in old maps or Sunday comics. Kids artwork is a perfect wrapping for presents to proud grandparents.
* When giving oversized gifts like bicycles – instead of wrapping them in paper, just put a bow on them.
* Reuse holiday ribbon from last year. If every American family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the planet!
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful is the local non-profit 501(c) 3 affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. Our mission is to empower the residents of Sugar Land through education and opportunity to take responsibility for enhancing their community environment. All donations are tax-deductible within limits of the law.
